Story and Synopsis

Surviving a dangerous return from space should be a reason to celebrate. For the three astronauts at the center of Above the Below, however, making it through the journey alive is only the beginning of their nightmare.

After a catastrophic re-entry sends their spacecraft off course, the crew crash-lands in the ocean. Their damaged capsule begins sinking toward the deep sea, leaving them isolated from the outside world and without contact with mission control.

As the situation deteriorates, the astronauts face a frightening combination of challenges. Their oxygen supply is running low, the pressure of the surrounding ocean threatens their chances of escape, and help is nowhere in sight. Every decision becomes more important as their remaining time slips away.

With survival growing increasingly uncertain, the crew must rely on their training, judgment, and ability to work together. Yet the circumstances may force them to make difficult choices, testing not only their skills but also their determination to stay alive.

Rather than focusing solely on the dangers of space, Above the Below turns an extraordinary journey home into an underwater fight for survival. The result is a high-stakes premise that places its characters in an environment where even a small mistake could have devastating consequences.

Cast and Characters

The film brings together three lead performers to portray the astronauts caught in this desperate situation.

Idris Elba as Jackson

Idris Elba stars as Jackson and also co-directs the film. Known for his work across action, drama, and suspense, Elba takes on a central role in a story that places its characters under extreme pressure.

His involvement behind the camera adds another interesting dimension to the project, allowing him to help shape the tension and atmosphere of this survival thriller.

Caitlin FitzGerald as Brookes

Caitlin FitzGerald plays Brookes, one of the astronauts struggling to survive the crash and its aftermath.

FitzGerald has appeared in projects including Masters of Sex and The Trial of the Chicago 7. Her role in Above the Below places her within a story built around isolation, uncertainty, and the need to make difficult decisions under pressure.

Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Rhodes

Hero Fiennes Tiffin stars as Rhodes, completing the film’s central trio of astronauts.

Audiences may recognize Fiennes Tiffin from the After film series and other dramatic roles. His character faces the same unforgiving circumstances as the rest of the crew, with survival depending on how the astronauts respond to their increasingly desperate situation.

Director and Crew

Directors: Idris Elba and Martin Owen

Idris Elba shares directing duties with Martin Owen, whose previous work includes The Loneliest Boy in the World and Twist.

Their collaboration brings together Elba’s experience as an actor and filmmaker with Owen’s background in directing genre-driven stories. With much of the tension stemming from the astronauts’ confined surroundings, the film has an opportunity to build suspense through atmosphere, character interactions, and the constant threat of disaster.

Screenwriters: Matt Mitchell, Elizabeth Morris, and Vicki Sargent

The screenplay is credited to Matt Mitchell, Elizabeth Morris, and Vicki Sargent. Martin Owen developed the original concept behind the film.

The writing team is responsible for bringing the survival scenario to life, balancing the science-fiction setting with the immediate human challenges of fear, limited resources, and the struggle to find a way out.

Producers: Gina Carter and Matt Williams

Gina Carter and Matt Williams serve as producers, with Future Artists Entertainment behind the production and Lionsgate handling distribution.

The film was shot at Pinewood Studios in England, including work on its underwater stages, helping bring its claustrophobic ocean setting to the screen.

Why to Be Excited for Above the Below

1. A Fresh Take on the Survival Thriller

Many science-fiction films focus on the dangers of exploring space. Above the Below takes a different approach by turning a failed return to Earth into the beginning of an underwater survival nightmare.

The contrast between the vastness of space and the crushing depths of the ocean gives the story a distinctive hook. The astronauts have survived one extreme environment, only to find themselves trapped in another.

2. Idris Elba Both Stars and Co-Directs

Elba’s involvement in front of and behind the camera is one of the film’s biggest draws. In addition to playing Jackson, he helps guide the story alongside Martin Owen.

For fans of Elba’s action and thriller work, this combination makes the movie particularly worth watching.

3. A Race Against Time

The dwindling oxygen supply creates an immediate sense of urgency. The crew cannot simply wait for circumstances to improve; they must make decisions while their options continue to shrink.

This setup offers plenty of room for tense exchanges, difficult choices, and moments when survival may depend on taking a dangerous risk.

4. An Isolated and Claustrophobic Setting

A damaged capsule trapped beneath the ocean creates a naturally unsettling environment. The astronauts have limited space, no reliable connection to mission control, and an enormous body of water separating them from safety.

That combination could make the film especially effective for viewers who enjoy suspense built around isolation and the fear of being trapped.

5. A Strong Three-Person Lead Cast

Idris Elba, Caitlin FitzGerald, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin form the central cast. With the story placing so much emphasis on a small group of people facing an overwhelming crisis, the performances and relationships between these characters will be essential to the film’s impact.

Their interactions may prove just as important as the physical dangers surrounding them.

When Does Above the Below Come Out?

Above the Below is scheduled for a U.S. theatrical release on December 4, 2026. The film is distributed by Lionsgate and combines action, science fiction, and survival-thriller elements.

International release dates may vary by country.

Final Thoughts

Above the Below has the ingredients for an intense survival thriller: a talented lead cast, a high-concept premise, and a setting that leaves its characters with very little room for error.

The idea of astronauts surviving a disaster in space only to become trapped beneath the ocean gives the film a compelling starting point. With Idris Elba co-directing alongside Martin Owen, audiences can look forward to a story that places human endurance at the heart of a dangerous science-fiction scenario.

For viewers who enjoy tense survival stories, claustrophobic settings, and characters forced to confront impossible odds, Above the Below is one to keep on the radar ahead of its December 2026 release.
