What if the child you spent nine years mourning came home, but the person standing in front of you was someone you barely recognized?
In Paradise Lost, a school bus carrying children disappears without a trace, leaving families devastated and desperate for answers. Among them is So-young, played by Kim Hyun-joo, whose young son Sun-woo is never found.
Unable to move forward, So-young turns to an augmented-reality programme called Children of Paradise. The technology allows her to interact with a virtual recreation of Sun-woo as a child, preserving the version of her son she remembers.
Then, nine years after his disappearance, the real Sun-woo (Bae Hyeon-seong) unexpectedly returns. But the boy So-young has kept alive in her memories and through technology is gone. Her son is now a grown man, marked by unexplained scars and a chillingly distant manner. Sharing a home with him becomes an unsettling experience as she struggles to reconcile the child she lost with the stranger who has come back.
As the mystery surrounding the missing children begins to unravel, So-young must confront painful questions about identity, memory, and whether the technology that helped her survive her grief has also made it harder to face reality. The film’s premise raises an intriguing question: can technology help us heal, or can it become a way of avoiding the truth?
