From Whistleblower Testimony to Courtrooms
Haugen’s decision to come forward with concerns about Facebook’s practices brought widespread attention to the issue, but the documentary looks beyond her congressional testimony.
The film follows Haugen alongside Kristin Bride, a parent advocate who became involved in the issue after losing her son, Carson, to cyberbullying. Their stories are presented alongside those of people working in research, law, advocacy, and youth activism.
The documentary examines how these individuals have moved their efforts from public testimony and advocacy into legal battles involving some of the world’s largest technology companies.
“This can’t be a system where the powerful get to grade their own homework anymore.”
— Frances Haugen
New Mexico’s Case Against Meta
The film’s release comes as legal challenges involving social media companies continue to develop.
According to the film’s promotional materials, New Mexico became the first state to take Meta to trial and reach a judgment, with judgments totaling $942 million. Meta is appealing those judgments.
The documentary recently screened in New Mexico, followed by a discussion featuring New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez and State Senator Antonio Maestas.
Torrez also appears in connection with the documentary’s release, saying:
“We proved that holding powerful tech companies accountable is possible…”
He described the film as an illustration of the effects social media can have on children.
